Fears is a Bristol name, founded in 1846 and revived in 2016 by the founder's great-great-great-grandson, and it sells direct from its own site with a short stockist list that includes Ace Jewelers, James Porter & Son, Collective Horology and Topper, each of which has had a retailer edition. The site shows prices in sterling including VAT with the ex-VAT figure beside it, and the en-us store shows dollars the same way; every price on this page is the ex-VAT sterling figure from the maker's feed unless it says otherwise, so a UK buyer adds 20% and a US buyer should read the dollar line where one is given. The spec sheets settle 3 things. Every model takes a 20 mm strap except the Garrick at 22 mm, and every one but the Brunswick Pt states a sapphire crystal with ARdur anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water resistance runs in 3 tiers: 30 m on the Arnos and the Pt, 100 m on the Brunswick 38, the Jump Hour and the Garrick, 150 m on the Redcliff and the Brunswick 40 Filton. The third thing is origin, and Fears is unusually plain about it. The product copy says hand-built in Britain in small batches; the spec sheet on the same page lists the case and caseback as made in Hong Kong for the Brunswick and Redcliff lines, in Switzerland for the Arnos, the dial in Germany and the movement in Switzerland. The Garrick is the exception, with its 904L case and hands made in Garrick's Norfolk workshop. Both sentences are on the same page, and a buyer paying £2,458 for a Redcliff is paying for the assembly and the finishing, not for a British case.

The Fears to buy if the point is the finishing rather than the cushion case: £2,458 on the 3-link bracelet with micro-adjust, £2,625 on black buffalo leather, a textile strap in the box either way. 39.5 mm, 46.95 mm lug-to-lug, 9.98 mm thick (10.37 mm with the open caseback), 150 m, screw-down crown and back, La Joux-Perret G100 with 68 hours, X1 lume in blue. It is the thinnest Fears with a date and the cheapest in the range. The complication, at £3,542 on Storm Grey Alcantara (£3,708 on the bracelet), and a row that has entered the Fears Archive while still carrying a price: 40.5 mm, 47 mm lug-to-lug, 12.8 mm thick, 100 m, a Sellita SW200 under Christopher Ward's JJ01 jumping-hour module with 38 hours of reserve, and a pure-silver barleycorn dial under blue lacquer. It is the longest and thickest of the Brunswicks, 0.5 mm and 0.9 mm over the Filton. The module maker's own complicated watch, the Christopher Ward C1 Bel Canto, is $4,995 at 41 mm and chimes rather than jumps. Barleycorn Plum is the same price.
