Best GMT watches under $1,000

Sixteen GMT watches, fifteen from $269 to $989 by list price on 19 September 2026 and one priced in euros, and the first thing each entry says is whether the local hour hand jumps or the 24-hour hand does. Seven are true GMTs on the Miyota 9075, and the cheapest of those is $595, which is $226 more than the cheapest caller from the same brand.

Checked 19 September 2026 · list prices on the maker's site that day unless marked street

A GMT watch has a fourth hand reading a 24-hour scale, so it can show a second time zone. Under $1,000 there are two kinds, and the difference is worth understanding once. On a true GMT, sometimes called a flyer or traveller, the ordinary hour hand is the one that moves on its own: you land, pull the crown to the first position, click the hour hand forward six times, and the minutes, seconds and 24-hour hand carry on undisturbed, with the date following. The Miyota 9075 does this, and every true GMT on this page runs it. On a caller GMT, sometimes called an office GMT, it is the 24-hour hand that moves independently and the ordinary hour hand stays tied to the minutes; you set the fourth hand to the time somewhere else and leave it there. The Seiko NH34 and its 4R34 sibling work this way, as do the quartz GMTs from Timex and Ronda, and the Sellita SW330-2 and ETA 2893 in the Swiss watches named at the end.

Neither is wrong, and the choice is about how you use it. If you travel, the true GMT is the one that behaves; if you telephone another office, the caller is enough and costs half as much. On this page a caller with a sapphire crystal starts at $320.60 and a true GMT at $595, and each entry's tag says which it is so nobody has to work it out from the calibre.

The line is the maker's list price on its own site on 19 September 2026, in dollars where the site shows them to a US buyer. Steinhart makes a GMT in this band and prices it in euros with no dollar figure, so it sits in its own section at the end, placed by the 19 September rate and printed in euros; Baltic's and Christopher Ward's GMTs are on other pages, named at the end. Ordered by price, ascending; the $226 step from Islander's caller to Islander's true GMT is the cleanest measure of what the jumping hour costs.

How the list was chosen

  • A fourth hand on a 24-hour scale, mechanical or quartz, tagged true or caller from the calibre the maker names.
  • List price on the maker's site on the check date, $1,000 or under, in dollars. No conversion from other currencies.
  • Specs from the maker's product page, linked under each entry. A dash means the maker does not publish the figure; Islander and Timex omit lug-to-lug on several pages and the entries say so.
  • Sapphire, or a stated reason (the Seiko is on Hardlex, the Timex on acrylic; they are the cheapest mechanical and quartz entries).
  • One watch per brand in the main list, except Islander and Nodus, which each sell a caller and a true GMT, because the price step between the two is the point of the page. The rest of the bracket follows without that rule.

$269 is the cheapest way to a fourth hand, and at that price the sapphire rule is waived rather than met. 38 mm, 12.5 mm thick, 50 m, a rotating red and blue 24-hour bezel, a date, a quartz GMT movement Timex describes only as Swiss, 18 mm lugs, domed acrylic. Timex publishes no lug-to-lug. It is a caller: the 24-hour hand sets independently and the hour hand stays tied to the minutes. It is the only quartz watch in the table; the Unimatic UT1-GMT in the notes is the other quartz GMT considered, at $760. For $51.60 more the San Martin is mechanical and sapphire; nothing else gets near $269.

$320.60 buys the cheapest mechanical GMT with a sapphire crystal here, and the figure will have moved by the time you read it. 39.5 mm, 46.5 mm lug-to-lug, 12.2 mm thick, Seiko NH34 caller, 100 m, top-hat sapphire, a 24-click bidirectional bezel with a distressed aluminium insert, a beads-of-rice bracelet. San Martin, Dongguan, shows most prices as a sale against a struck figure. The SN0116 sits in the brand's Classic collection, which its own page describes as homage watches; assembly is not stated beyond the company address and the warranty is two years per the homepage. For $48.40 more the Islander is 200 m from a US retailer, on the same movement. The San Martin guide covers the Original Design line.

$369 buys the deepest-rated GMT on the list, an NH34 in Long Island Watch's 42 mm SKX-platform diver case: 14 mm thick, 200 m, double-domed sapphire, a bidirectional 24-hour bezel (ceramic, steel or sapphire by variant) plus a 24-hour rehaut, a bracelet tapering 22 to 18 mm. The page gives no lug-to-lug. Two colourways were in stock on the check date. It is a caller; Islander does not say where its automatics are assembled, and the warranty is one year. For $76 more the Spinnaker is 39 mm and 47 mm lug-to-lug on the same movement, with 50 m less. The brand's true GMT, the Republic Traveler, is four entries down at $595; the JFK ($449) and Melville ($379) are further NH34 callers in the Islander guide.

The page does not describe the bezel. The 42 mm Bradner GMT at $490 is the same movement in a 50 mm lug-to-lug, 15 mm thick case with an internal bezel. Spinnaker prices vary by colourway on the same page, so trust the figure on the variant you pick. For $50 more the Seiko SSK001 is the name with Hardlex; for $130 more the Nodus is assembled in Los Angeles.

$495 buys the GMT that put the caller layout in front of most buyers at this price: 42.5 mm, 46 mm lug-to-lug, 13.6 mm thick, Seiko 4R34 caller, 100 m, a bidirectional 24-hour bezel. The 4R34 is Seiko's own-brand relative of the NH34 in the microbrands above, and the function is identical. The crystal is Hardlex, Seiko's hardened mineral, the stated exception to the sapphire rule. The cushion case keeps the lug-to-lug at 46 mm despite the 42.5 mm diameter. The SSK003 is the blue and red colourway at the same price. Long Island Watch listed it at $396 and was sold out on the check date. For $50 less the Spinnaker is sapphire and 150 m on the equivalent movement.

Warranty 24 months, transferable. The Sector Deep Pioneer is the same NH34 in a 500 m case with a compass ring at $675. For $20 more the Islander Republic Traveler is a true GMT, which is the sharpest price comparison on the page; Nodus's own true GMT, the Contrail, is $325 more and four entries down. Islander does not publish lug-to-lug or thickness, so the table carries dashes and the buyer carries the risk. The blue ISL-238 was in stock on the check date; white and black were out. €850 including German VAT, €714.29 without, the figure a buyer outside the EU pays before duties, and the only Swiss automatic GMT here. A caller: the Sellita SW330-2 in élaboré grade sets the 24-hour hand on its own. 39 mm, 46.78 mm lug-to-lug, 12.5 mm thick, 20 mm lugs, 300 m, domed sapphire with double AR inside, a bidirectional 24-hour bezel with a blue and red ceramic insert. The lug-to-lug is 0.95 mm longer than the Vaer G5's on the same 39 mm case, with 100 m more. The Vaer at $989 is the dollar alternative, a true GMT; the Steinhart's trade is the caller layout, euros and customs.

Considered and left off

GMTs over the line on the maker's US price. The Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT 39 (Sellita SW330-2, caller, 45 mm lug-to-lug, 11.3 mm, 150 m) is $1,395 on rubber and on the under-$1,500 list; the C60 Trident GMT 300 is $1,675 and on the under-$2,000 list, with the Farer Lander IV and Nevada at $1,575 apiece on the same calibre. The Yema Superman Worldtime GMT is $1,549 at list, shown on sale at $929, and in the Yema guide. The Baltic Aquascaphe GMT MK-II (Miyota 9075, true GMT, 47 mm lug-to-lug, 13.8 mm, 200 m) is €850 with an on-page dollar estimate, billed in euros, in the Baltic guide. The Unimatic U1-GMT-AEG at $1,050, whose product page lists an NH35A with a GMT function, is in the Unimatic guide with the quartz UT1-GMT at $760 on a Ronda 515.24D, 300 m.

Siblings kept to their maker's page so no brand runs to four entries. Nodus Sector Deep Pioneer ($675, NH34, 500 m) and TrailTrekker ($975, Miyota 9075) are in the Nodus guide; Islander JFK ($449), Melville ($379) and Calabro ($379), all NH34 callers, in the Islander guide; the Spinnaker Bradner GMT ($490), the Croft's larger sibling, in the Spinnaker guide. The Zelos Horizons V2 GMT ($899, ETA 2893, a 2020 listing, sold out) is in the Zelos guide.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a true GMT and a caller GMT?

Which hand moves on its own. On a true (flyer) GMT such as the Miyota 9075 the hour hand jumps in one-hour steps, so on landing you set local time without disturbing the rest. On a caller (office) GMT such as the Seiko NH34 or 4R34 the 24-hour hand is the independent one and the hour hand stays tied to the minutes. Quartz GMTs, the Sellita SW330-2 and the ETA 2893 are callers.

What is the cheapest true GMT watch?

The Islander Republic Traveler at $595, on the Miyota 9075 with 200 m and a sapphire bezel insert; Islander does not publish its lug-to-lug or thickness. The next true GMTs are the Lorier Hyperion at $799 (pre-order on the check date) and the Boldr Odyssey Freediver GMT at $899. Below $595 every mechanical GMT here is a caller.

Is the Seiko SSK001 a true GMT?

No. The 4R34 sets the 24-hour hand independently and the hour hand moves with the minutes, which is the caller layout. The same is true of the NH34 in the San Martin, Islander, Spinnaker, Nodus Sector II and Charlie Paris entries. It was sold out at the one retailer fetched on the check date, and the SSK003, in the rest of the bracket, is the same watch in blue and red at the same $495.

Are there Swiss GMT watches under $1,000?

Two with a dollar list price, both quartz: the Timex Q GMT at $269 (movement described only as Swiss) and the Unimatic UT1-GMT at $760 on a Ronda 515.24D. The one Swiss automatic in the band with a maker's price is the Steinhart Ocean GMT 39 nova at €850, a caller on the Sellita SW330-2, on this page in euros. The Christopher Ward Sealander GMT is $1,395 on the US site and the Zelos Horizons V2 ($899, ETA 2893) is a sold-out 2020 listing. All are callers.
