About Small Seconds
A magazine of independent watchmaking, built from the numbers makers publish rather than from wrist time.
Small Seconds is a magazine of independent watchmaking. It lists from the maker's sheet and dates every price. Each entry carries the figures a buyer compares before anything else: movement, case diameter, lug-to-lug length, thickness, lug width, water resistance, crystal, and the list price on the day it was checked. Those figures come from the maker's own product page, linked under every entry, and each one carries its check date. Where a maker withholds a figure, the cell says so.
It is worth being plain about what this is not. It is not a review site. Nobody here has the watches in hand; there are no wrist shots, no notes after three months, no view on how a bezel turns. Sites that do that work well are linked from the brand guides, and a buyer should read one before spending $700. What Small Seconds does that most of them do not is put every current model from a brand in one table, keep the prices dated, and record the lug-to-lug figure that decides whether a 40 mm watch sits like a 40 mm watch.
The opinions here are the kind a good tailor gives: which cloth, at what price, and what you would get instead for the same money. They are stated with a number and they are stated once.
How a list is built
- The bracket is the list price on the maker's site, in US dollars, on the check date. A watch that has crossed the line since the last look is moved or removed at the next check, and the "considered and left off" section says so.
- Every spec is copied from the maker's page or spec sheet. Where a maker does not publish a figure (Seiko rarely gives lug-to-lug, for instance) the cell shows a dash rather than a number lifted from a forum.
- Order within a list is editorial, set by the spec sheet against the bracket: what the money buys, and what is missing. It is not a ranking of quality anyone here has tested.
- Prices in euros or pounds are shown as the maker shows them. No currency is converted here.
Money
Some outbound links pay a commission if you buy. The affiliate disclosure lists which programs are live. A commission never moves a watch up a list; the same makers appear whether or not they have a program, and several of the brands here sell direct with no affiliate scheme at all.
Corrections
If a figure is wrong or a price has moved, say so through the contact page with a link to the maker's page. Corrections are made at the next rebuild and the check date on the entry updates.
