Quartz and solar watches, by price

Fifty-four watches that never need winding: battery quartz from $30, solar from $299, meca-quartz chronographs, and one Cartier that charges through its dial.

Checked 20 September 2026 · list prices on the maker's site that day unless marked street

Quartz on this site is not the budget tier by default. The Vaer D4 solar diver is $429 with sapphire and 200 m; the Marathon Navigator is a $550 issued watch; Unimatic's Toolwatch line runs a Seiko sweeping-seconds VH31; Cartier's Tank Must SolarBeat is $4,400. The bottom of the page is Casio, and nothing on the site is more reliably in stock.

The floor, and included as such. $29.95, in stock, 35.2 mm across, 38.2 mm lug-to-lug, 8.5 mm thick, 21 g, resin case and crystal, 7-year battery. Casio lists water resistance with no metre rating, so the table shows a dash; do not swim in it on the strength of the page. The A168W-1 at $39.95 is the same idea in a chrome-plated case at 36.3 mm and 50 g. Every other watch on this page costs at least twice as much, and the spec sheets say what the money buys: a metre rating, a metal case and, from $150, sapphire.

The F91W in a metal-look case, and the one to buy of the two if 21 g reads as flimsy: 50 g in chrome-plated resin, 36.3 mm across, 38.6 mm lug-to-lug, 9.6 mm thick, with the same 7-year CR2016 battery and an EL backlight, $39.95 and in stock. Casio lists water resistance with no metre rating, as on the F91W, so the table shows a dash. The AE1200WH at the same $39.95 is the alternative: 100 m, a 10-year battery and world time, in a case 5.8 mm wider. The trade is that $10 over the F91W buys plating and 29 g and nothing else the sheet can show.

The most watch per dollar in the bracket: $39.95 buys 100 m, a 10-year battery and world time for 31 zones. 42.1 mm across, 45 mm lug-to-lug, 12.5 mm thick, 39 g, resin case and crystal, amber LED backlight. It was showing notify-me on casio.com on the check date. The F91W at $29.95 is the alternative for $10 less, with a 7-year battery and no metre rating; the DW5600E at $99.95 is the next step up, with shock resistance and 200 m. The trade is a resin crystal, which scratches, and a case 6.9 mm wider than the F91W's.

The cheapest analogue Timex in the data, and a 30 m watch, which is the reason it sits this far down. Quartz, 38 mm, mineral crystal, 20 mm lugs, a polished silver-tone brass case at 47.8 g, Indiglo backlight, on a slip-through fabric strap, $77 on timex.com. Timex publishes neither lug-to-lug nor thickness for it, so the table carries two dashes. The Scout at $95 is the alternative for $18 more: 40 mm, 50 m, 11 mm thick, on a strap with spring bars. The Weekender's trade is 20 m of water resistance and two blank columns; what it keeps is the size, 2 mm under the Scout.

The cheapest 200 m watch on any list on this site, and at $84.95 there is no serious argument against it. Casio publishes the case as 48.5 by 44.2 by 12.1 mm: read 44.2 mm across, 48.5 mm lug-to-lug and 12.1 mm thick. That lug-to-lug is short for the diameter, which is why the Duro fits wrists a 44 mm watch would normally overhang. Mineral crystal, aluminium unidirectional bezel, fluorescent lume on hands and indices, quartz. Casio claims no ISO certification and the page gives no lug width. The automatic answer to the same brief is the Islander Turtle at $195, on sapphire, which was out of stock on the check date. The trade is the mineral glass.

Timex publishes no lug-to-lug for any watch, so that column is a dash, and the case is brass with a titanium finish, not titanium. Timex publishes no lug-to-lug. The Scout and the Weekender are brass, and apart from the Islander Turtle it is the only day-date here. The Weekender 38 at $77 is the cheaper Timex analogue, 30 m on a slip-through fabric strap. A mechanical Timex in the same family costs $259: the hand-wound Marlin, on the under-$300 list. Quartz, with a battery Casio rates at 3 years, 45 mm across, 47.5 mm lug-to-lug, 100 m, $150. The alternative in the same family is the Edifice EFV650D chronograph at $120, on mineral glass and 2.3 mm thicker. It was showing notify-me on casio.com on the check date and the page gives no lug width. The floor of the ladder, and the entry with the least published about it: $185 buys a titanium case and a spec sheet made of pictures. Bertucci sells the A-2T direct at $185 in every band variant and its product page states, in text, only a 40 mm unibody titanium case, a fixed bezel and a quartz movement it does not name; the water rating, crystal, thickness, lug-to-lug and band width are shown as images and are not in the data here. The brand's lume wording is "Swiss Super-Luminous". The A-4T Super Yankee at $295 adds a low-battery indicator, and a search snippet gives it as 44 mm, which is not adopted. What the next $64 buys is a spec sheet, and an automatic.

The one GMT under $300, and the reason to buy it. A fourth-hand caller GMT on a Swiss quartz movement (Timex's wording), 38 mm, 12.5 mm thick, 50 m, domed acrylic, 18 mm lugs, a rotating red and blue 24-hour bezel and a date, $269. Caller means the GMT hand sets independently and the local hour does not jump, as with the Seiko NH34 in the Islander and Spinnaker GMTs on the GMT list. The Q Timex 1979 Reissue incumbents list is no longer on timex.com; this is the current Q. No lug-to-lug is published. The Vaer DS2 at $239 is the other quartz on the page, sapphire and 150 m; the Q trades both for the second time zone.

Assembled in Hong Kong. Against the S5 at $189 the $90 buys the chronograph and 2.4 mm of thickness. Unimatic's U3-AEG runs the sibling VK64 at $840, which puts $279 in proportion; the Vaer's case is the plainer one and the money reflects it.

Dan Henry's chronographs are all VK63 and the 1962 is the 39 mm one; the 1964 Gran Turismo is 38 mm and $310, over the line. The alternative for the money is the Vaer RS1 at $279, the same movement with 100 m and sapphire, noted below. The Dan Henry's trade is mineral glass and 50 m, and its argument is the case.

A Jomashop landing page showed it at $219 with a $100 coupon; street runs far below list. The trade is the mineral crystal, and the alternative is the Vaer S5 on the under-$200 list, sapphire at $189 with a battery.

The crystal is sapphire-coated mineral rather than the 1962's K1, and the run is 1,964 pieces per colour. Against the 1962 the $20 buys 1.2 mm off the lug-to-lug, 0.6 mm off the thickness and the coating, and costs a millimetre of dial and the panda options. The 19 mm lug is the awkward figure; straps in that width are scarcer than 20 mm. Brew's Retrograph at $375 is the next meca-quartz up, with sapphire.

The solar diver to buy at $525, and the thinnest 200 m watch on the page at 10.7 mm. Seiko V157 solar quartz, ISO 6425 certified, 42.8 mm, 49.2 mm lug-to-lug, sapphire, LumiBrite, unidirectional bezel, 20 mm lugs. The price needs its source: seikousa.com returned a 404, so $525 is Long Island Watch's list figure, sold out on the check date. Against the King Turtle at $650 it is 2.5 mm thinner and $125 less; the Vaer D4 at $429 on the under-$500 list is the solar diver for less, 3.2 mm shorter across the lugs. The trade is a 49.2 mm lug-to-lug, the longest on the page.

The Marathon to buy if the tritium matters more than the movement: $550, 41 mm, 48 mm lug-to-lug, 11.5 mm thick, on an ETA F06.105 quartz. The case is CeraShell, a bio-sourced plastic loaded with ceramic powder, and the bezel is a bidirectional 12-hour aluminium ring, so it tracks a second time zone the way no other Marathon here does. Water resistance is 60 m, enough for rain and a wash, not for the pool. Unimatic's UT4 is the quartz alternative at $515 with 300 m and a steel case, 1 mm longer and without tritium. The Navigator's argument is the tubes and the material; the trade is the 60 m.

Seiko VK64 meca-quartz, 38 mm, 46 mm lug-to-lug, 11.5 mm thick, 50 m, sapphire with anti-reflective and anti-fingerprint coatings, 20 mm lugs, 316L steel.
