Pilot watches, by price

Twenty pilot watches, from a $249 Islander Aviator to the IWC Mark XX and Breitling Navitimer. Fliegers run large by design, so the lug-to-lug column earns its place here.

Checked 20 September 2026 · list prices on the maker's site that day unless marked street

The flieger case was drawn for a glove, which is why so many of these are 42 mm. Laco's Aachen and Augsburg are the type A and type B dials at EUR 390; Islander's Aviator is the same idea at $249 on a Seiko movement; Nodus's Sector II Pilot puts the layout in a 38 mm case. Above $1,000 the page is Longines Spirit, Sinn, Bremont and IWC.

This is the mechanical watch to buy under $200: one of two in this data, and the cheaper by $7. San Martin lists it at $188 in two versions, an NH35 automatic at 11.3 mm thick or an ST3621 hand-wound at 9.8 mm. Case 41 mm, lug-to-lug 50 mm, 100 m, sapphire, C3 lume, on a 22 mm quick-release leather strap that tapers to 18 mm. The same money buys the Vaer S5 at $189, quartz, with a second strap. The bronze takes a patina, which is the reason to choose it over steel. The trade: 50 mm lug-to-lug is long for a 41 mm case, and the price moves with promotions, so the figure is a snapshot.

The Islander for the larger wrist, and the day-date pilot to buy at $249. Type-B dial on a Seiko NH36 automatic, 42 mm, 48 mm lug-to-lug, 12 mm thick, 100 m, sapphire with anti-reflective coating, C3 Super-LumiNova, 22 mm leather strap with a signed buckle. The ISL-14 black and the ISL-16 and ISL-17 blue dials were in stock on the check date; DLC versions are $279. At 48 mm lug-to-lug it is 0.5 mm shorter than the 39 mm Mitchel and 3 mm wider, so the two cover the larger and the smaller wrist at the same price. The trade against the San Martin 6200 at $275 is 100 m and a strap in place of a bracelet.

Laco 2S automatic, 42 mm, 50 mm lug-to-lug, 11.75 mm thick, 50 m, sapphire, 20 mm lugs; the Sellita-based Laco 31 is €55 more, anti-reflective coating €50. The Islander Aviator at $249 on the under-$300 list is the Type B alternative in dollars, on the NH36. The Laco's trade is 50 m and a 50 mm lug-to-lug; the return is the maker's own name on a pilot watch rather than an homage to one.

Medallion Yellow and Polaris White are the same price. The 82S0 is from the older Miyota 8200 family rather than the 9000 series in the dearer Resolutes, and the $190 step up to the Resolute 36 is mostly that movement and 2 mm of thickness. Nodus's Sector II Pilot at $550 is the steel alternative, 38 mm by 47 mm with a day-date on a Seiko NH36; the RZE is titanium, 1 mm shorter and $51 less.

The Nodus Sector II Sport at $525 is the small-case alternative that can be bought, on an NH38. The Merlin's trade is acrylic and a second-hand market that sets its own price.

The Sector Deep is the rotating-bezel alternative in the same 38 mm case for $100 more, buying 400 m of rating at a cost of 1.9 mm of thickness. The Pilot exists for the day-date; without that need, the Sport is $25 less and could be had.

Case materialstainless steel
Price$5,900

The second-cheapest entry and the thinnest spec sheet: $5,900 "VAT excluded" on the IWC US page for 40 mm, the in-house calibre 32111, steel and a calfskin strap, with height, water resistance and crystal in tabs the text fetch did not capture. Those cells are dashes; IWC refused direct connections and the page was read through a US reader. The Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 on the bracelet is $8,800, with the calibre unnamed in the text read. Against the Rolex Explorer 36 at $7,900: 4 mm larger, $2,000 less, an in-house calibre from each, and Rolex the one that states a certificate and a rating on the page as read. The IWC saves $2,000 and publishes less.
